Elematic on board for US high speed rail growth
The pace of development in high speed rail is picking up speed in North America, and Elematic Inc. is accelerating its plans to get play a role in what promises to be a multi-billion-dollar initiative.
In the most recent move, Elematic USA General Manager Matt Cherba became one of the newest members of AREMA, the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association. The new affiliation reflects Elematic’s belief that the US will soon be a major user of the prestressed cement crossties produced by the company’s long line manufacturing process.High speed rail opens up a significant new market for cement cross ties in a nation where the use of wooden ties is a centuries-old tradition. The change is brought about by the 150+ mph speeds of the new high speed trains. Safe travel at such speeds demands a road bed that is far more stabile and solid than traditional wooden ties can provide. Decades of high speed service in Europe and the Pacific Rim point to the superior stability of prestressed monoblock sleepers, a precast cement product which machines from Finland-based Elematic have been producing for nearly a decade.
“We are seeing a significant groundswell of support for high speed rail across the country,” said Cherba from Elematic USA’s office in Brookfield Wisconsin. “There’s also a tremendous amount of government stimulus money out there to fund new high speed rail lines. When you see high demand and plenty of funding coming together, that’s a place where you want to be product-wise.”
The government rail developers and private industry contractors in AREMA are likely to be interested in Elematic’s long line technology for producing prestressed sleepers in Europe. US project managers will be particularly interested in two key benefits of the Elematic process:
o Superior quality and productivity. By curing each sleeper in a heated mold, a high quality component can be de-molded in only 8 hours. The result is a typical production volume of 960-1152 units per shift, an important advantage in the long-distances demanded by American geography
o Labor savings. It takes only 12 workers to completely run the long line molding process; only .08 hours of labor goes into each sleeper producedCherba noted that Elematic USA has begun discussions with private contractors who plan to participate as a sleeper supplier for projects now in development across the US.
According to Cherba, establishing a presence within AREMA is an important part of gearing up for the new opportunity. “We know there will be a learning curve when it comes to high speed rail engineering technology,” he said, “and we plan to bring our expertise to the table and contribute technically. We also plan to be a part of building a knowledge base among current students, so the next generation of railway engineers can graduate fully up to speed with high speed rail design.” He said that Elematic will have a presence at AREMA’s 2010 Annual Conference and Exhibition in Orlando Florida in August.
“I’m excited about all the possibilities within AREMA and in the high speed rail field in general,” Cherba added. “This represents an exciting possibility for us as a company, and a significant step forward in the transportation infrastructure of our nation as a whole.”

Block Berge Bygg in Norway buys Elematic E9 to peak production
At Elematic’s stand in BAUMA 2010, champagne glasses are raised April 20th at 11 am to toast Block Berge Bygg’s acquisition of the first Elematic Extruder E9. “We are investing in new machinery to enable us to follow through more extensive construction projects requiring hollow-core with larger spans and profiles”, says Terje Skårland, Plant Manager at Block Berge Bygg. “Our aim is to increase production capability and secure delivery of high-technology products. There was no need to look for other suppliers, as our decades-long cooperation with Elematic has been highly successful.”
A leader in adopting new precast technology, the Norwegian company was also the first to purchase the E9 predecessor, king-sized marvel of extrusion technology EL900E, as well as the multifunctional saw EL1300A. Their factory also includes an ELSA –line for producing top energy saving sandwich facades, and Elematic’s new Comcaster, a multi-purpose casting machine for a variety of concrete products, is on its way to Norway. “Our cooperation has always been one of mutual respect and benefit, developing ever more effective production methods and turning challenges into ultimate solutions”, says Tarmo Sahala, Senior Export Manager at Elematic. “The E9 is efficient and intelligent, easy to maintain, control, and use, and even more durable than its predecessors. I am confident that Block Berge Bygg will enjoy features such as the renewed user interface, including compaction automation that truly makes the running of the machine easy and evens out variations in slab quality, without having to make adjustments.”
Block Berge Bygg has also utilized the elite software in their production - they were the first to add on both ELiPLAN ERP and Tekla Structures. Before this they were already using ELiPLAN with Impact, and it is still in use in hollow-core production. “Purchasing our production machinery as well as the software from one-stop-supplier Elematic enables a multitude of possibilities from a production technology point of view”, describes Terje Skårland. “We are also very satisfied with their maintenance service, which is an important factor considering that we have a total yearly production of 150 000 tons.”
The role of technological forerunner in precast has also led to the company focusing on energy saving solutions, of which one example is their ongoing development of isolation for facades that significantly decreases energy consumption. In addition, the company has honed the surface treatment of wall elements, enabling a wide selection of different surface materials to be applied to the concrete.
“With our new machinery and the readiness to offer high-technology products for both floors and walls, we are looking to the future with highly positive spirits”, Terje Skårland concludes. “We have chosen Elematic as our partner to secure our seat in the front row of peak precast production.”

FIRST IN BELARUS: Elematic delivers an ELSA-line to Soligorskij DSK for manufacture of precast concrete walls
Finnish know-how on building construction will soon be used in Belarus. Elematic Oy Ab has signed a significant contract with a Belorussian client. Elematic machinery to be delivered to an extension of a precast factory will be producing precast elements to build a couple thousand dwellings annually.
This contract is opening the Belorussian market for Elematic. The client, OAO Soligorskij DSK is a building company specialized in housing. With current capacity Soligorskij's output of traditionally produced apartments is roughly 500/year. Changing into Elematic technology increases the capacity fourfold. In addition the production will be modernized enabling manufacture of precast elements to apartments of new type, offices, shopping centers, and school buildings. The production technology and line according to the ELSA-concept, recently launched by Elematic, gives the needed flexibility and versatility.
Realization of investments of this kind requires prearranged financing, which in current economical and market situation has proved to be by far difficult or impossible to find. Guarantees given by a specialized financing company owned by the State of Finland, Finnvera plc, played an essential role in financing this trade.
Elematic Oy Ab delivers globally complete plants, production lines, machinery and equipment for manufacture of precast concrete elements. Related services, e.g. training and maintenance, are an essential part of Elematic's activities. Over 90% of Elematic's turnover comes from export. Recently the main market areas have been Middle- and Far East and the Russian speaking countries.
