Elematic 50 years: Press release. Precast concrete - the environmentally friendly alternative
Elematic Oy Ab
- Supplying the precast concrete industry with machinery, equipment and services since 1959Elematic Oy Ab is one of the success stories of the Finnish mechanical engineering industry, which is renowned for its innovative and high-quality products. The company is the undisputed technology and market leader in precast concrete plants, production lines, machinery and equipment worldwide, and, during the last two years, it has also been Finland's most profitable business in terms of return on capital invested. Almost 95 per cent of the net sales is generated outside Finland, more than half of the total coming from the Middle East.Even though the fifty-year-old company has been hit by the recession like everybody else, megatrends are in its favor. Constructors' choices are increasingly determined by concerns about the climate change and, in this respect, precast concrete is the most environmentally friendly option.
The heating and cooling of buildings are the biggest sources of carbon dioxide. As Leo Sandqvist, Managing Director of Elematic, points out, because of their structure, precast concrete wall elements act as an effective insulation material in both warm and cold environments, and help to achieve substantial cuts in energy consumption.
Higher energy prices are an additional incentive to use energy-efficient solutions. High funding costs are also a factor, making precast concrete more attractive, at least in the short term. Time is money and building with precast elements is quick. Furthermore, according to Sandqvist, the precast concrete structures produced with today's technologies are, in terms of appearance and variety, light years away from the monotony of the past decades.
Professionals in the sector know Elematic as a trailblazer pioneering new ideas. The company's innovative approach is evident in a large number of patents and stylishly designed production lines, machinery and equipment, for which the company has received several awards. The new extruder, to be introduced this summer, is another step forward in streamlined design and intelligent functions.
With net sales of EUR 137 million, the Elematic Group is in a class of its own. Its largest competitors are far behind at EUR 30-40 million. Elematic has the Middle East, the CIS, the Baltic States and Western Europe as its main markets. The strong position of the Finnish company on the global markets is partly explained by many years' experience in exports. Elematic has been an international player since the 1960s. After all, Finland is a small country and the company would not have been able to grow without exports.
According to Sandqvist, the fact that Elematic is able to provide a broad range of products and solutions is another important success factor. Elematic is the only one-stop-supplier in and its range of products and services covers everything from equipment and machines to production lines and complete plants. Services include training of customer personnel, supervision of installation and extensive support functions.
As the Group's own production capacity is limited, the machinery and equipment sold by Elematic are built in manufacturing plants, most of which are located in Finland.
Elematic has seen a number of corporate acquisitions and name changes during its history. Between 1973 and 1997, its principal owner was Partek, a big multi-sectoral group, and the company was known as Partek Concrete Engineering (PCE). Since 2007, Elematic has been owned by the company management and a private equity fund administered by Pamplona Capital Management.
Elematic has its headquarters in Toijala, which is located about 25 miles south of Tampere, a well-known center of mechanical engineering and automation industries. The company has subsidiaries in the United States (Elematic Inc.), Germany (Elematic GmbH) and Russia (Elematic OOO). It also maintains a sales and customer service center in Dubai and a sales office in France. The manufacturing units are Rimera Oy, X-Tec Oy and SF Steelform Oy. Elematic has a workforce of about 200.
To mark fifty years of operations, Elematic has published a book on its history. The publication is available in Finnish and English. On June 26, the anniversary of the founding of the company, Elematic's customer magazine ‘Concrete Issues' will appear in a thoroughly revised form. The publication will now also be available as an interactive web magazine.

Column-making made easy with new Elematic mold utilizing FaMe
Elematic has launched a new kind of modular mold for beams and columns. The modular structure makes it easy to assemble, disassemble and store the molds. The new mold is also lighter and more durable than the traditional molds thanks to new material, and easily adjustable.
Side forms are quickly fastened into casting bed with Elematic FaMe fastening method. The method saves a lot of space in the production hall since there is no longer need for support triangles outside the mold. The new mold is also a showcase for the versatility of FaMe; it can be used with variable kinds of molds, the use isn't restricted to table and battery molds.
User feedback has been very encouraging and customers have been delighted about the possibilities of the new concept.

Battery Mold: FaMe adds safety and speeds up furnishing
Maximum flexibility with maximum safety called by the customers, and Elematic develops a new, flexible and universal FaMeFlex solution to Battery Molds. In this new application the magnets, profiles and side plates remain fixed even when the system is dismantled thus adding safety to the whole process.
FaMe in Battery Molds is already successfully introduced and in use in Finland, Sweden, UK, Netherlands, Mexico and in the Middle East.
"This new way of using FaMe has already proved to be what expected. We did not hesitate to go for it, since we trust Elematic's expertise as the one-stop-supplier to the precasters", says Mr Harri Bergholm, factory manager of Parma, Kotka, and adds, "and although designed from battery mold's point of view it can be used on other steel tables also - a big advantage."
Also other users are very satisfied with higher speed of furnishing batteries and increasing safety. Even the sceptical ones have given attributes like: fast, light, safe, easy to use, easy and economical to modify.Just change the side plate material (e.g. steel, plywood, plastic, wood) or hight and furnish any wall from 70 mm onwards.

Mexico: GCC starts production of precast walls with Elematic battery mold
Mexican company GCC expands its precast production by adding on a new wall production technology. GCC can now offer complete precast building system from low-cost housing to various applications in commercial, educational and residential buildings.
GCC, Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (www.gcc.com) is a producer of cement, premixed concrete, aggregates and precast concrete products. Company's headquarters are situated in Chihuahua, Mexico but it has operations in several other cities in Northern Mexico, Bolivia and in the Midwestern United States. The company has now started wall production in Salamayuca, 35 km south from Juárez, Mexico with new Elematic battery mold thus pioneering with it in Mexico.
GCC uses this battery mold for manufacturing of façades and internal walls. The size of the mold is 3,1 x 8,1 m. In addition to actual battery mold Elematic also delivered Fastening Method system (FaMe) needed in the production as well as supervision services in Mexico and training for precast concrete element designing and installation in Finland. This delivery was a start for a business relationship between GCC and Elematic and at the same time opened a new market area for Elematic being Elematic's first delivery in Mexico.
The novelty in this new kind of battery mold lies in the fact that the capacity of a standard battery mold has been nearly doubled by means of a so-called shutter plate. This means that the casting cell of an existing battery mold is halved with a new shutter plate that is moved by means of a crane. Besides the doubled capacity of each casting cell, the leading idea of the system is two castings per day; only casting and hardening take place inside the battery mold, demolding and outfitting are carried out elsewhere. This speeds up the production cycle and increases the capacity. Further advantages are that the molds require less space and are easy to use.
"Elematic was a good choice for us because they had the perfect solution for our needs. They are a trusted partner and have a long experience in precast machinery," says Juan Carlos Ares Cárdenas, GCC Constructive Systems Manager.
